Personal Development comes with Growth and Goals…
We all have goals we’d like to achieve, but sometimes it seems difficult to take the actions that will enable us to fulfil on those goals.
In his book, Linchpin, Seth Godin talks about the Lizard Brain – that part of our unconscious brain that tries to protect us by keeping us in the same place.
There is no growth to be had in our comfort zone. Every worthwhile goal requires us to step out of our comfort zone and take new or different actions … and that can be scary, which is when the Lizard Brain goes into overdrive.
Whenever we set an “intention” for a new goal, we are putting ourselves “in tension” because there’s always a gap between where we are now and where we want to be.
Think about a goal that you’d like to achieve. What’s holding you back from making it a reality?
The art of goal fulfilment is being willing to take the necessary action in the face of fear or tension. Sometimes that demands real courage!
However, when we do choose to act, the personal development we achieve on the way to attaining our desire is often more valuable than the goal itself.
To make your goal feel less overwhelming and more achievable, break it down into a series of milestones and tasks that will each move you closer to desired outcome. And every time you complete one of those tasks, celebrate your success!
This will help to keep you feeling motivated and focused as you move closer to your goal.
